The fire contest - Revelation 13:13.

The two witnesses ( Revelation 11:5 ) had used fire to

destroy their enemies.

The false prophet was using an illusory pseudo-fire to

impress the earth dwellers that his power was just as great.

Revelation 13:13 and 14

And he ( the false prophet )

doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from

heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of

those miracles which he had power to do ...

note - In Revelation 4 Today, Elijah and Enoch are presented as the two witnesses - John the Apostle is another possibility.
